Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest specific rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
