Our team is verifying video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the images originated was based on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.
Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the street layout verified where the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
