The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 lives perished and over 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the events leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
