Patrick Bamford Signs With Sheffield United Despite Leading Derogatory Chants About Manager Chris Wilder
The striker has signed with Sheffield United only half a year after starting insulting songs aimed at their manager, Wilder.
The 32-year-old forward, a free agent since leaving Leeds, has put pen to paper on a deal joining the Championship club in difficulty through the winter. His lengthy career at Elland Road was ended by mutual consent this past summer.
One of Bamford’s final notable acts as a Leeds player included starting insulting chants about Chris Wilder during Leeds' success festivities this spring. Currently, the one-cap England player is set to play under Wilder as Sheffield United's boss looks to rescue the team he loves out of the drop zone.
Previous History Involving Bamford & the Manager
The pair had previous conflict prior to Leeds moved up to the Premier League the previous campaign and United lost the playoff final by Sunderland. The manager described Bamford as a "muppet" back when the roles were reversed during the 2018-19 season and Sheffield United won automatic promotion whereas Leeds fell short in the playoffs.
Making Amends & Looking Ahead
All appears to have been put behind them with United, the league's least productive attack, in desperate need of improvement in attack while Bamford aiming to resurrect his career.
The Wilder chant spread widely this spring. An apologetic Bamford and the Leeds manager, Daniel Farke, called Wilder the next day.
Chris Wilder commented back then: “Had a conversation with Patrick yesterday and I’ve no issue at all with it. I’m not sure regarding the language from a fellow professional! However I valued and respected him calling me.
“We spent 20 minutes and the same again I spoke to Daniel as well and had a half-hour chat with him and he's a super guy, a class act. When I was playing we would dish it out and accept it and that’s an integral part of football at every level, including a Sunday morning. I've got absolutely no issue. I'm fine with it and I said that to Patrick.”
Recent Career Challenges
The forward made 18 appearances for Leeds in the previous campaign but the ex- Forest, Chelsea & Boro player has struggled with injury in recent years.
