Meteorologists are saying an icy beginning to the new year, with snow likely throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are advised to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Plans Go Ahead Amid Forecasts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are planned to proceed, unlike last year's cancellation. This is in spite of advisories for snow across northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be needed," stated the national forecaster.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and open skies. Temperatures are forecast to be low, so extra layers a necessity, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, snow alerts are active for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Travelers have been urged to allow extra time for trips on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are likely on the transport network.

The Mercury Set to Plummet Further

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Public Health Alerts Released

In addition, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials explained this indicated the weather was expected to trigger notable consequences across the NHS and care systems. This involves a potential rise in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.
