In a recent appearance, star Jude Law remarked he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for portraying Vladimir Putin in a cinematic adaptation. The movie, however, may align so closely with the carefully constructed image promoted by Russian state media that, within Russia, it functions as a compliment rather than a challenge.

The Crafted Superhero

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and the country's pop-culture machine have worked together to craft a tailor-made persona of the president. This character is a political superhero devoid of flaws, an ex-intelligence officer reframed as a local 007 who always knows more than he reveals.

Cinematic Reinforcement

One recent example is a television show released last October, helmed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a fictional security officer inexplicably chosen to “save” Russia from disorder. Although he is called a different name, the implication is unmistakable: the hero must be a familiar security officer.

International depictions frequently result in reinforcing this same narrative instead of undercutting it. A new film based on a bestselling satirical novel aims to subvert the leader's mythology by presenting him not as a cause but as a symptom, shifting the narrative weight to the spin doctors around him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

On screen, the president is presented as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to stabilise the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to take the top job. His response is that he would rather govern from the background, desiring enduring influence.

This tale is the Kremlin’s export myth: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. Historically, these events took place.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one ever begged him to take the job. The presidency was effectively a selection process with no shortage of contenders. Central to this process stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the state de facto.

• The shortlist featured various figures, including an opposition leader subsequently assassinated and a former spy chief.
• Per an expert who studied Putin’s biography, the future president merely met the required parameters: obedient, from the security services, and politically neutral.
• A businessman familiar with the events said the key criterion was controllability and faithfulness, not leadership.

Building the 007 Persona

Experts agree that the notion of him as a powerful KGB spy was built after the fact. Claims about his clandestine activities in Dresden fall apart under examination. Fundamentally, he was an administrator and routine duties, a low-level clerk not engaged in actual agent work.

Curiously, the move to framing him as a “spy” could partly have been triggered by Daniel Craig’s arrival as 007. His harder interpretation led Russian media and social media to make comparisons with Putin. Edited images swapping the actor's likeness with his surfaced on Moscow streets, feeding the increasing trend to frame him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an actor popular with viewers there, the authorities will not miss the opportunity to portray this choice as a small victory. Its exclusion of public dissent, the political rivals, or prominent activists from its narrative, despite covering recent years, is a welcome aspect for official messaging.

Domestically, the president is often an all-powerful presence who remains unseen directly. His influence is signaled through portraits or calls “from above”. In this new film, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that may inadvertently validate the exact legends it might seek to examine.
